Public
building evacuations present particular challenges
Members of the public are
unfamiliar with the specific emergency procedures and exits in the
building, and they cannot be trained in evacuation drills as they would
be in their place of work.
Nor is it easy for the
building owners and operators to undertake realistic drills without risk to visitor safety, trading time and revenues.
In the event of an actual
emergency there may be many retailers, and possibly other organisations,
that need to evacuate. The plans of each organisation need to work
together to ensure the evacuation is as quick as it is possible to be or
to avoid the significant risks of crowd crushes from large numbers of
people moving in different directions. This is straight-forward when all
emergency exits are available but can be difficult when one or more
exits are not available. Co-ordinating many different organisations
during an emergency can be challenging.
